Lower Limb Muscles Flashcards
Where does psoas major sit anatomically?
Superficial to iliacus and posterior to the inguinal ligament.
Where does psoas major originate?
Anteroinferior aspect of transverse process (L1-L5) and anterolateral aspect of vertebral bodies (T1-L5) and the adjacent vertebral discs.
Where does psoas major insert?
Lesser trochanter of the femur
What nerve innervates psoas major?
Anterior rami of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd lumbar nerves.
What is the collective name for psoas major and iliacus?
Iliopsoas
Where is the iliacus muscle found anatomically?
Deep to the psoas major muscle and inguinal ligament
Where does iliacus originate?
Iliac crest and superior 2/3rds of the iliac fossa
Where does iliacus insert?
Lesser trochanter of the femur via the psoas major tendon.
What nerve innervates the iliacus muscle?
Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
What movement is Iliopsoas involved in?
contract unilaterally to flex the hip joint and bilaterally to flex the trunk.
where is gluteus maximus anatomically?
Superficial to the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, gemellus muscles, obturator internus and piriformis muscles.
Where does gluteus maximus originate?
Area of ilium posterior to the posterior gluteal line, the posterior aspects of sacrum and coccyx and the sacrituberous ligament.
Where does gluteus maximus insert?
Gluteal tuberosity and the iliotibial tract
What nerve innervates gluteus maximus?
inferior gluteal nerve (L5-S2)
What movement is gluteus maximus involved in?
Extends, laterally rotates and abducts the thigh at the hip joint.
Where is gluteus medius anatomically?
superficial to gluteus minimus and deep to gluteus maximus.
Where does gluteus medius originate?
Area of ilium located between the posterior and anterior gluteal lines.
Where does gluteus medius insert?
Lateral aspect of greater trochanter of the femur.
What nerve innervates gluteus medius?
Superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1)
What movement is gluteus medius involved in?
Stabilises pelvis when walking and medially rotates and abducts the thigh at the hip joint.
Where is gluteus minimus anatomically?
Deep to gluteus medius and gluteus maximus.
Where does gluteus minimus originate?
Area of ilium located between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
What does gluteus minimus insert?
Anteriolateral aspect of greater trochanter of the femur.
What nerve innervates gluteus minimus?
Superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1)
