Secondary headache syndromes need investigating in secondary care setting and most primary headache syndromes don’t
What are red flag symptoms with a headache?
Cognitive effects e.g. photophobia
Seizures
Fever
Visual disturbances
Vomiting
Weight Loss
How do we feel pain from a headache?
If a headache is affecting the intracranial vessels and meninges, or pressure increases in the brain then the trigeminal axons supplying it will send the pain signal leading to a headache. The same happens with extracranial vessels which are innervated by the sensory cervical rami (C2-C4)
What mneumonic can be used to identify red flag symptoms of headaches?
SNOOP4
What does the mneumonic SNOOP4 stand for?
S = systemic symptoms e.g. fever, weight loss, night sweats etc..
N = neurological symptoms like change in mental status or level of consciousness
O = onset is sudden
O = onset after 50 years of age
P = pattern change
