Lecture 9: Nose & Sinus Muscles of Facial Expression Flashcards
External Nose
-projects outwards allowing air to enter the nasal cavity
-made up of bone and cartilage
Nasal Cavity Purpose
- Humidify, warm & filter air
- Facilitate drainage of the paranasal sinuses
- Secrete mucus
which bone(s) does the external nose begin at
nasal
Bones in the nasal cavity
-frontal
-nasal
-maxillary
-vomer
-palatine
-sphenoid
-ethmoid
medial wall of the nasal cavity
nasal septum (bone and cartilage)
What forms the medial wall
ethmoid bone, septal cartilage and vomer bone (cartilage not seen anteriorly)
What composes the lateral walls of the nasal cavity
-superior nasal concha and meatus
-middle nasal concha and meatus
-inferior nasal concha and meatus
what covers the lateral walls
musous membrane
which concha is its own cranial bone
-inferior nasal concha
functions of the nasal concha
Increase surface area in the nasal cavity
-humidify air
-filter air
-warm up the air
nasal cavity borders
-roof
-Floor (palate)
-medial wall (nasal septum)
what is the roof of the nasal cavity made of
-cribriform plate
-nasal bone
-frontal bone
-sphenoid bone
*cant see cribriform plate anteriorly
What is the floor of the nasal cavity made of (also the roof of the oral cavity)
palatine and maxillary bone
Cartilaeg of the external nose
- Lateral nasal cartilage
- Major Alar cartilage
- Minor Alar Cartilage
Paranasal sinuses
-cavities found in the skull
-lined with respiratory mucosa and secrete mucous
which bones have paranasal sinuses
-ethmoid, frontal, maxillary, and sphenoid
Function of paranasalsinuses
- lighten the weight of the skull
- humidify/heat/filter inspires air
- secrete mucus
purpose of nasal meatuses
recieve drainage from the paranasal sinuses
the superior meatus drains the
sphenoid, and posterior ethmoid sinuses
the middle meatus drains
the frontal, anterior ethmoid and maxillary sinuses
