Lecture 12: Lungs & Mediastinum Flashcards
Mediastinum contains
the heart and pericardium
Mediastinum
-central compartment of the thoracic cavity
-contains thoracic viscera outside of the lungs
what is the mediastinum bordered laterally by
the lungs & pleural cavities
what is the mediastinum bordered anteriorly by
the sternum
what is the emdiastinum bordered inferiorly by
the diaphragm
what is the mediastinum bordered posteriorly by?
the thoracic vertebral column
divisions of the mediastinum
superior and inferior
superior mediastinum
-viscera: superior portions of the espohagus and trachea
-vessels: arch of aorta & branches, SVC & brachiocephalic veins.
3 regions of inferior mediastinum
anterior, middle and posterior mediastinum
Anterior mediastinum
-between sternum and heart
-contains thymus gland
middle mediastinum
-contains the heart and roots of the great vessels
posterior mediastinum
-between the heart and vertebral column
-contains the thoracic aorta, inferior espohagus, azygous system
thymus gland
-lymphoid organ
-important site of white blood cell maturation
-hormone production
Conducting portion of respiratory system
*passage of air
-nasal cavity
-pharynx
-larynx
-trachea
-primary bronchi
-secondary bronchi
-tertiary bronchi
-bronchioles
-terminal bronchioles
trachea bifurcates where
carina
which muscle controls diameter of trachea
trachealis muscle
trachea bifurcates into
L & R primary bronchi
R primary bronchus branches into
3 lobar bronchi
L primary bronchus branches into
2 lobar bronchi
lobar bronchi branch into
tertiary bronchi (9-10 for each lung)
each tertiary bronchi supplies
a bronchipulmonary segment
what sits underneath right lung
liver
what sits underneath left lung
heart
which lung has th cardiac notch
left
right lung (lobes and fissure)
-oblique and horizontal fissure
-superior, middle and inferior lobes
left lung (lobes and fissure)
-superior and inferior lobe
-only oblique fissure
where do vessels enter the lung
hilia
pariteal pleural
covers the inner surface of the thoracic wall and extends over diaphragm and mediastinum
visceral pleura
covers the outer surfaces of the lungs; extends into the fissures between lobes
Respiratory portion
**gas exchange occurs
- respiratroy bronchioles
- alveolar ducts
- alveoli & alveolar sacs
