Lecture 3. Diversity of Life: Fungi, Lichens, Algae and Angiosperms Flashcards
What is a protist ?
A eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, plant or fungus that is usually unicellular
What nutrition is a fungi ?
Heterotrophs
What are the roles played by fungi ?
- Decomposer
- Mutualists
- Parasites
What is mutualism ?
Both organisms benefit
Where did fungi evolve ?
Water
What are some examples of parasites ?
- Zombie ant
- Ringworm
- Honey fungus
What is endosymbiosis ?
One organism lives inside the cell of another organism
What are red algae ?
Mostly aquatic
What are green algae ?
Terrestrial
What are brown algae ?
Diatoms evolved from red algae
What is half the oxygen on earth generated by ?
Algae through photosynthesis
What is a lichen ?
A unicellular or filamentous green algae or cyanobacteria living among the filaments of a fungus
What is a seed ?
An embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering
What are some characteristics of seeds ?
- Seeds contain a tiny, embryonic plant, a source of energy to fuel initial growth and a protective coat
- Suspended animation allows plants to persist during unfavourable periods
- Seeds are easy to disperse, allowing dispersal of plants throughout the world
- Can be very long lived and favourable
