Lecture 19: Thigh and Knee Flashcards
What is the function of the sartorius and nerve?
Knee extension, hip flexion, knee flexion. Femoral nerve.
What are the 4 muscles within quadriceps femoris? Function/nerve?
ALL = KNEE EXT.
Rectus femoris: hip flexion
Vastus intermedius, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis.
Nerve = femoral
Which nerve innervates the medial compartment? What are the roles of these muscles?
Obturator. Hip adduction, flexion, medial rotation, hip extension.
Which 5 muscles are in the medial compartment?
Pectineus, adductor longus, gracilis, adductor brevis, adductor magnus.
Which three muscles are a part of the posterior compartment? Which nerve innervates them>
Semitendinosus, semimembranosus, biceps femoris (short/long)
Where do the sartorius, gracilis, semitendinosus attach?
Sartorius = ilius
Semitendinosis = ischium
Gracilis = pubis
What are the 4 bones of the knee and their function?
Femur = transmits force from pelvis
Tibia = weight bearing
Fibula = rotational stability
Patella = increases force production
What are the two main functions of the knee?
Transition zone = connects thigh to shank
Standing & Locomotion
Which two joints make up the knee? What is the joint between the tibia & fibula called?
Femorotibial, patellofemoral.
Proximal tibiofibular joint.
What are the three functions of menisci?
Deepen + stabilize articulating surfaces
Shock absorbers.
Protects underlying cartilage + bone.
What do the collateral ligaments do? Where are they located?
Provide mediolateral stabilization.
Most lateral & medial parts of the knee.
What are the two cruciate ligs called?
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
What are the two attachment points of the popliteus? What is its function/nerve?
Lateral femoral condyle, posterior tibia. Unlocks the knee, tibial N.
