Laxatives (83) Flashcards
Constipation
Abnormally infrequent and difficult passage of feces through the lower GI tract
Complications with constitution
-hemorrhoids
-anal fissure
-fecal impaction
-rectal prolapse
-lazy bowel
Laxatives MOA
Bulk forming, osmotic, fecal softener, stimulant, enema, suppositories
Never use laxatives if
You have a bowel obstruction
Overuse or abuse of laxatives may lead to
Atomic colon and dependence
Bulk forming
High fibre substances
-absorbs water present in lumen to increase bulk
-distends bowel to initiate reflex bowel activity
Examples of bulk forming
Methyl cellulose
Osmotic laxatives
Non absorbable compounds or salt solutions that draw water into intestinal lumen
AE of osmotic laxatives
Can cause substantial water loss or dehydration
Hyperosmotic compounds
Increase fecal water content
-bowel distension, inc peristalsis and evacuation
Example of hyperosmotic compounds
Lactulose
Salines
Increase osmotic pressure within the intestinal tract, causing more water to enter the intestines
-bowel distension, inc peristalsis and evacuation
Example of saline
Magnesium hydroxide
Low vs high doses of osmotic
Low: constipation
High: diagnostic or surgical preps
Fecal softeners
Stool softeners and lubricants
-promote water and fat in stools
-lubricate fecal material and intestinal walls
