Lab Week 5 (exam 2) Flashcards
What is tissue?
Group of cells that work together to perform a particular function
What are the 4 basic kinds of tissues?
1) epithelium (epithelial- plural)
2) connective tissue
3) muscle
4) nerve
What is epithelium tissue?
Covering of the human body
Ex: skin, lining of mouth and digestive system
Interfaces- way down in lungs between blood
Where glands come from
Used to describe by number of layers and shape
What are the different layers of epithelium tissue and what are they?
1) simple- single layer of cells
2) stratified- multiple layers of cells
3) pseudostratified- single layer of cells but looks like many layers
What are the different shapes of epithelium tissue?
1) squamous- wide cell but not tall (rectangle)
2) cuboidal- height and width are the same (square)
3) Columnar- height of cells is greater than width (rectangle standing up)
What is connective tissue?
Consist of sparsely (spread out) distributed cells living amidst a whole bunch of non living stuff (matrix)
What is matrix?
Non living stuff
Either solid, semisolid or liquid
What are 3 types of connective tissue (CT)?
1) CT “proper” (classical)
2) supporting CT
3) Fluid CT
What are the 2 types of CT Proper?
1) loose CT proper- a lot of fluid in matrix
2) dense CT proper- virtually no water
What is the dense CT regular and irregular tissue?
Regular- protein fibers go in the same direction
Irregular- protein fibers cross cross
What are the 2 types of loose CT proper tissue and explain
1) Areolar- true classical loose CT tissue
2) adipose- fat tissue
What are the 2 types of dense CT proper and explain
1) ligaments- almost always connect bone to bone
2) tendons - connect bone to muscle
What are 2 of supporting CT and explain
1) cartilage- (Hyaline) the matrix is semisolid
2) bone- matrix is solid
What are 2 types of fluid CT and explain
1) blood- matrix is fluid
2) lymph- matrix is fluid, lymphatic system carried this,
Mostly white blood cells and liquid
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
1) skeletal muscle
2) cardiac muscle
3) smooth muscle
