Lab Week 4 (Exam 2) Flashcards
What 2 basic capabilities should a microscope have?
1) magnification
2) resolution or resolving power
What is magnification?
How the big the image can become
What is resolution or resolving power?
How sharp the image is
When you increase magnification what 3 things happen?
1) image darkens
2) field of view decreases
3) depth of field reduces
What happens when the field of view decreases?
How much you can see all at once
What happens when the depth of field reduces?
How much you can see sharply at one time without adjustment
What 3 things can you do to correct the light source when the image is too dark?
1) turn up the lamp
2) system of lenses under stage and raise the condenser
3) in condenser there is iris diagram
What is a stage?
Platform where slide sits
What is the condenser?
System of lenses under the stage
What is an iris diaphragm?
It is a whole where the light passes through
Narrow it down to get a brighter image
What are the 2 lenses a microscope has?
1) eye piece or ocular (the place where you put your eyes)
2) nosepiece or turret (rotating piece above the stage
What is the objective lens?
All lenses on rotating piece (nosepiece or turret)
To figure out how magnified an image is what do you do?
Eyepiece x objective
What is high dry magnification and how much is that?
Highest you can get without using oil
400x
What is oil immersion lens and how much is it?
When you put the lens in oil to open light
Gives you the highest magnification
1000x
