KIN 100 - Bones and Joints of the Pectoral Girdle (lecture 4) Flashcards
What does the pectoral girdle refer to
the scapula and clavicle and is part of the appendicular skeleton
What does the clavicle connect
the upper limb to the trunk
What does the clavicle articulate with medially and laterally
articulates with the manubrium of the sternum medially
also articulates with the acromion of the scapula laterally
Describe the concavity of the medial and lateral half of the clavicle
Medial half of the bone is convex anteriorly
Lateral half of the bone is concave anteriorly
Describe the surface of the superior and inferior surface of the clavicle
Superior surface is smooth
Inferior surface is rough
What does the acromion of the scapula articulate with
the lateral end of the clavicle
What does the head of the humerus articulate with
the glenoid fossa of the scapula
Describe intrinsic ligaments
thickenings of portions of the joint capsule
Describe extrinsic ligaments
provide support to a joint but are located some distance away from the joint capsule
Describe the attachment of the sternoclavicular joint
sternal end of the clavicle articulates with the manubrium of the sternum
Structurally the sternoclavicular joint is classified as what
as a saddle joint
Functionally the sternoclavicular joint is classified as what,
Functionally ball and socket joint
Intrinsic ligaments of the sternoclavicular joint (2)
- Anterior sternoclavicular ligament
- Posterior sternoclavicular ligament
Extrinsic ligaments of the sternoclavicular joint (2)
- Interclavicular ligament
- Costoclavicular ligament
What does the acromioclavicular joint attach
Acromion f the scapula articulates with the acromial end of the clavicle
What synovial joint is the acromioclavicular joint
plane joint
Intrinsic ligaments of the acromioclavicular joint (1)
Acromioclavicular ligament
Extrinsic ligaments of the acromioclavicular joint (2)
- Coracoclavicular ligament
- Conoid ligament
- Trapezoid ligament
What synovial joint is the glenohumeral joint
ball and socket
What deepens the glenoid cavity of the glenohumeral joint
glenoid labrum
Intrinsic ligaments of the glenohumeral joint (3)
- Glenohumeral ligaments (Superior, Middle, Inferior)
- Coracohumeral ligament
- Transverse humeral ligament
Extrinsic ligaments of the glenohumeral joint (1)
Coracoacromial ligament
Does the scapula have any attachment to the rib cage
no direct attachment
- However there is scapulothoracic joint that is known as a physiological joint (functionally)
Describe how different joints contribute to the scapulohumeral rhythm
For every 3 degree rotation ,
2 degree come from glenohumeral joint
1 degree comes from scapulothoracic joint
Describe the movements of the sternoclavicular joint
- abduction of the arm (clavicle elevates to 60 degrees)
- Protraction/retraction of scapula (lateral end of clavicle swings anteriorly and posteriorly)
- flexion of the arm (clavicle rotates on its own axis)
What muscles assist in maintaining shoulder joint stability
rotator cuff muscles
What does the joint capsule of the glenohumeral joint allow
full abduction of the arm
What is involved in shoulder separation
Dislocation of the glenohumoral joint
What is involved in shoulder dislocation
dislocation of the glenohumeral joint
