Kevin's Cards about Plant Body Systems Flashcards
What three organelles do plants cells contain that animal cells don’t
Chloroplast, Cell wall, and a Large Central Vacuole
What are the 3 types of organs that plant tissue create
With their 4 tissues, plants create 3 organs: Roots, Stems, and Leaves
What is the function of roots
To absorb Nutrients and Water, Store food, and anchor the plant
What does xylem transport throughout the plant
Xylem transports mainly water
What does phloem transport throughout the plant
Phloem transports foods in the form of sugar
What are the 2 important functions of leaves
Leaves make food in the form of sugars and regulate water loss in a plant
What are the ingredients for photosynthesis
Sunlight, Carbon dioxide, and Water
What substances does photosynthesis create
Oxygen and glucose ( glucose is a type of carbohydrate )
What part of the plant cell is mostly responsible for photosynthesis
Chloroplast
What is the building block of plants
Plant Cells
What happens during photosynthesis
Plants convert energy from sunlight into carbohydrates, a usable type of chemical energy.
What are the four types of Plant tissues
Ground tissue, Dermal tissue, and Vascular tissue, and Meristem tissue
What is the job of Ground Tissue
Its function is to store nutrients, support the plant, and carry out photosynthesis
What is the job of Dermal Tissue
Provides cover and protection, and meristematic tissue grows new cells
What is the job of Vascular Tissue
Transports water and nutrients throughout the plant in networks of small tubes.
What are the 2 main organ systems of Vascular plants
The Roots and Shoots
What does the Root system contain
The root system contains the underground roots of a plant
What does the Shoot system contain
The shoots system contains the leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits.
What are the 2 most important Vascular tissues of plants
Xylem and Phloem
Xylem Definition
A vascular tissue composed of several vessels, stacked end-to-end to quickly move water throughout the plant.
Why is Xylem important
This is important because plants need to move tens to hundreds of gallons of water in their bodies per day, depending on their size
What are the circles in a trees trunk made up of
Xylem tissue
Phloem Definition
Phloem transports sugars and other nutrients rather than water, and uses much smaller vessels
How are Xylem and Phloem Different in transportation
Xylem tubes only pull water up, from the roots to the shoots, whereas phloem can transport the sugars made in the leaves of a plant up or down to its stems and roots.
Why do carnivorous plants need to eat insects and other small animals
Carnivorous plants need nutrients, such as nitrogen and calcium, which their environments don’t provide
Do carnivorous plants carry out photosynthesis
Yes they do through their leaves
What are the four main types of traps that carnivorous plants use
Bladder traps, flypaper traps, lobster pot traps, and pitfall traps
How are stimuli and responses related
Stimuli act like a trigger that causes a response or reaction to occur
Tropism Definition
A growth response in plants
Auxin Definition
A plant hormone that controls how fast plant cells grow
Dormancy Definition
A period of inactivity
Geotropism Definition
A plant growth response to gravity
Photoperiodism Definition
A plant’s response to seasonal changes in the length of night and day
Phototropism Definition
Plant growth response to the direction of light
Thigmotropism Definition
A plant growth response to touch
What is tropism
A tropism is the movement response to different types of stimuli in a plant’s environment
What are three different stimuli that can cause plant tropism
Gravity, Light, and Touch are the 3 stimuli that can cause a plant tropism
If you place a plant in a Sunny window, it will begin to grow toward the light. What type of tropism is this an example of
Phototropism
Which tropism causes the roots on a plant to grow downward
Geotropism
What king of tropism is a plant’s response to touch
Thigmotropism
Why do some plants flower in the spring, while others flower in the summer
Many flowering have a critical night length, which means they will only bloom when the night lasts a certain number of hours
What time of the year do short-day plants produce flowers
Short-day plants need long need long nights to produce flowers, so they flower in the fall or winter when the nights are longer
When do long-day plants bloom
Long-day plants need shorter nights to flower, and they bloom in the spring or summer
What are day neutral plants
Day-neutral plants aren’t affected by the length of day and night and grew all year-round
What are2 things that might trigger dormancy
Cooler temperatures and shorter days can trigger some plants to go dormant
How does dormancy help some plants survive
Dormancy helps these plants survive the colder temperatures and lack of liquid water in the winter
Pitfall Trap Definition
A cup-shaped growth with liquid inside. This pitcher plant is a classic pitfall. It lures bugs in with the promise of sweet, delicious nectar. But once they come in, they drown in the stuff inside.
Passive Definition
Plants that wait for prey to walk in them
Lobster Pot Trap definition
Inward-pointing hairs force the bug to keep crawling in one direction, until it gets to a sort of stomach, where it’s digested.
Flypaper Trap Definition
Sticky beads smell delicious to insects. But once they land there, they’re stuck. Pretty soon, the plant absorbs the nutrients from their decaying bodies.
Active Definition
Plants that move to capture their prey
Do carnivorous plants have muscles
Carnivorous plants have cells that move in response to touch. When a bug touches them, a chemical reaction starts. The cells on one side of its tentacles expand really fast, causing them to bend.
What is another way plant traps move
Other traps move by changing the water pressure within their cells. When a plant senses a bug in its “mouth,” the cells in its leaves swell with extra water, making the leaves snap shut.
Bladder Trap Definition
When a plant’s sensors detect motion, special pumps suck water into the plant. Any small creatures nearby get vacuumed in
What are carnivorous plants diet
Well, all these plants live mainly on insects, but they can eat small animals, too, like mice or frogs.
Fungi are responsible for what
Approximately two-third of the infectious plant diseases
