Kevin's Cards about Human Body Systems Flashcards
About how many organs do we have
80 organs
Why can’t we pin point an exact number for the number of organs we have
Since the definition isn’t precise
Organ Definition
A part of the body that carries out specific functions
What are all organs made up of
Tissue
What is the Pineal Gland
A tiny structure in the brain that controls your sleep cycle
Organs must do what to keep your body alive
Work together
What are the 11 organ systems
Skeletal, Muscular, Digestive, Excretory, Circulatory, Respiratory, Lymphatic, Endocrine, Reproductive, Nervous, Integumentary
Which 2 systems make up the locomotive system
Muscular and Skeletal systems
What are the levels of organization of the Human Body
Human Body, Body Systems, Organs, Tissues, Cells, Molecules, Atoms
What are the structures of the Integumentary System
Skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, oil glands
What is the function of the Integumentary System
Guards against infection and injury; helps regulate body temperature
What systems does the Integumentary System interact with
Nervous, endocrine, respiratory, excretory, circulatory systems
What are the structures of the Skeletal System
Bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons
What is the function of the Skeletal System
Supports body; protects internal organs; allows movement; stores minerals, produces blood cells
What systems does the Skeletal System interact with
Circulatory, muscular, nervous systems
What are the structures of the Muscular System
Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle
What is the function of the Muscular System
With skeletal system, produces movement; helps circulate blood and move food through the digestive system
What systems does the Muscular System interact with
Skeletal, circulatory, endocrine, nervous, digestive systems
What are the structures of the Circulatory System
Heart, blood vessels
What is the function of the Circulatory System
Transports oxygen, nutrients, and wastes; fights infection; helps regulate body temperature
What systems does the Circulatory System interact with
All systems
What are the structures of the Respiratory System
Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
What is the function of the Respiratory System
Brings in oxygen needed by cells; removes carbon dioxide from body
What systems does the Respiratory System interact with
Circulatory, nervous systems
What are the structures of the Digestive System
Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, large intestine, rectum
What is the function of the Digestive System
Breaks down food, absorbs nutrients; removes food wastes
What systems does the Digestive System interact with
Endocrine, muscular, nervous, excretory, circulatory systems
What are the structures of the Excretory System
Skin, lungs, liver, kidneys, urinary bladder, urethra
What is the function of the Excretory System
Removes waste products from the body
What systems does the Excretory System interact with
Digestive, integumentary, respiratory, nervous, endocrine, circulatory systems
What are the structures of the Nervous System
Brain, spinal cord, nerves
What is the function of the Nervous System
Controls body’s responses to changes in inside and outside environments
What systems does the Nervous System interact with
All systems
What are the structures of the Endocrine Systems
Glands, such as the thyroid, pancreas, adrenals, ovaries, testes, and others
What is the the function of the Endocrine Systems
Controls growth, development, and energy processes; helps maintain homeostasis, or balance, of body’s internal environment
What systems does the Endocrine System interact with
Circulatory, nervous, reproductive, digestive, excretory, integumentary systems
What are the structures of the Reproductive System
Testes, ducts, urethra, penis. In females: ovaries, ducts, uterus, vagina
What is the function of the Reproductive System
In males, produces and delivers sex cells; in females, nurtures and protects developing embryo
What systems does the Reproductive System interact with
Circulatory, respiratory, nervous, muscular, endocrine systems
What happens if carbon dioxide builds up in the blood stream
Carbon dioxide is a waste product in the human body. Cells need oxygen for respiration and to function properly. If carbon dioxide builds up in the body, it can make you very sick. If the body is not able to remove the excess carbon dioxide (and get enough oxygen), organs may start to shut down
When you are sick, your immune system helps protect against disease and germs. What organs (and systems) are part of your body’s immune response
Your skin (integumentary system) is the first thing that protects you from outside germs. Saliva in the mouth, mucus in the nose, tears in your eyes, and acid in your stomach also help kill germs and act as barriers against germs. Your blood (circulatory system and lymphatic system) carries white blood cells where they are needed to fight disease
Circulatory System Definition
Group of organs and tissues that work in a coordinated manner to transport materials throughout the human body
Digestive System Definition
Group of organs and tissues that work in a coordinated manner to break down food into nutrients that can be used by body cells
Endocrine System Definition
The set of ductless organs that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream to regulate life processes.
Immune System Definition
Group of organs and tissues that work in a coordinated manner to protect the body from infection
Integumentary System Definition
The body system consisting of the skin, hair, and nails that protects the internal organs from the surrounding environment
Lymphatic System Definition
System that works with the immune system to protect the body from infection and remove dead pathogens and other cellular waste
Muscular System Definition
Group of tissues that work in a coordinated manner with other systems to allow various kinds of motion
Nervous System Definition
The body system that receives information from internal and external surroundings and coordinates a response
Reproductive System Definition
Group of organs and tissues that work in a coordinated manner to allow humans to produce offspring
Respiratory System Definition
Group of organs and tissues that work in a coordinated manner to take in oxygen and discard carbon dioxide
Skeletal System Definition
Group of tissues that work in a coordinated manner to provide physical support for the body
Urinary System Definition
Group of organs and tissues that work in a coordinated manner to rid the body of chemical waste and to regulate water levels in the body
