Kevin's Cards about Living Things 7th Grade Flashcards
What is a Cell
The Smallest structural unit that can carry out the functions of life.
Homeostasis Definition
The maintenance of a stable internal enviroment
Stimulus Definition
A change in an organism’s environment to respond to
Biosphere
Collection of all Living Things
What are the Characteristics of Living Things?
- Living things are made of 1 or more cells
- Living things obtain and use energy
- Living things grow and develop
- Living things reproduce
- Living things respond and adapt to their environment
- Livings things eliminate waste
- Move through a Life Cycle
What is Response
An organisms reaction to their stimulus
What do living things need
Water, Food, and Shelter
Metabolism Definition
The process of breaking down nutrients from food and using them to build up other substances they need to survive.
What are some examples of homeostasis in our body
Energy use, Regulation of Body temperature, The Breakdown of Food, and Waste Removal
What is the body temperature of a Human
98.6℉ or 37.5℃
Autotroph Definition
An organism that can make its on food
Heterotroph Definition
An organism that can’t make its own food and relies on other organisms to survive
Decomposer Definition
Break down & get energy from dead, organic matter
What are all living things made up of
Matter
Matter Definition
Anything with mass and takes up space
Atom Definition
Basic building block of matter
Element Definition
A substance made up of only one type of atom that can’t be broken down into a simpler substance and still maintains its properties
Compound Definition
A substance made up of at least two different types of atoms chemically bonded
Molecule Definition
Smallest amount of any substance, made up of 2 or more atoms chemically bonded together
What are the 4 common elements to living things
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen
Where are the 4 common elements to living things found
They are found practically in every molecular compound of living organisms in different combinations.
Which element is known as a principle element
Carbon
Where is carbon found
In all large molecules that living things need to functions
Why is carbon so unique
It is unique due to its ability to form 4 bonds and how easy it can easily bond with other elements like hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Also it can form bonds with other carbon atoms to form a large molecule
How chemists classify molecules
By organic and inorganic
Organic Molecules Definition
A compound containing carbon bonded to hydrogen and possibly other elements
Inorganic Molecules Definition
A compound contain neither carbon nor hydrogen
Why does the body need water
We need water to dissolve substances, maintain body temperature, and flows in body carrying nutrients
What is the most abundant molecule in the human body
Water
What happens when carbohydrates are broken down
They release energy so your body can use it
What is the body’s main source of fuel
Glucose (carbohydrate)
What are lipids
Fats, oils, and cholesterol and are a source of energy
What are Lipids function in the body
Form membranes around cells, release energy, maintain body temperature, and sometimes form hormones
Enzyme Definition
A type of protein that speeds up chemical reactions
Nucleic Acids Definition
The blueprints for your body
What are 2 important Nucleic Acids
DNA and RNA
How does the body use carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins and where do they come from
We use them as sources of energy and to function and they are found in the food we eat
What are Proteins function in the body
Build body structure and control chemical reactions
