Q

What did France want to do

A

France knew that Spain had colonies in Florida and Mexico. France wanted to make sure that it could claim the land in between those colonies. This would prevent Spain from being able to monopolize, or control, the region

Q

What struggle did La Salle run into in 1685 and where did he end up

A

Finding the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico was a difficult task. La Salle and his group of explorers had faulty maps. They did not have a reliable way to determine how far north or south they had traveled. Though they did not know it, La Salle and his party had actually sailed at least 100 miles too far and gone past the mouth of the Mississippi. This brought his expedition, or journey, to the coast of Texas in 1685.

17
Q

In 1687 what happened to La Salle

A

He was murdered by one of the colonists for his aggressive behavior

18
Q

If the Spanish didn’t learn of La Salle’s colony would they have much of an impact on Texas history

A

No

19
Q

When the Spanish heard of La Salle’s colony what did they want to do

A

When Spanish explorers heard about the colony, they were determined to locate and destroy it

20
Q

In 1687 what did the Spanish find

A

The party found pieces of La Salle’s wrecked ships. It took a long time to find the settlement. This time allowed them to learn a lot about the geography of East Texas, which helped them in their later adventures.

21
Q

Who were the Hasinai

A

A branch of the Caddo

22
Q

Which branch of Indians did the Spanish befriend

A

Hasinai
