Joints Flashcards
What are articulations?
joints
What is the inverse movement between mobility and stability?
The more MOBILE a joint is the less STABLE a joint is
What is a fibrous joint?
Its dense irregular tissue that has no joint cavity
what is a cartilaginous joint?
Joint that cartilage binds the bone and has no joint cavity
What is a synovial joint?
Ligaments support the articulating bones and bone separated by a joint cavity
What is synarthrosis?
Immovable joint
what is amphiarthrosis?
slightly moveable
What is diarthrosis?
freely moveable
What is a suture?
A fibrous joint that is bonded by dense regular tissue and is immoveable
what is syndesmosis?
A fibrous joint held together by interosseous ligaments slightly moveable
what is gomphosis?
A fibrous joint at the root of the tooth attached by periodontal membranes immoveable
What is synchondrosis?
A cartilaginous joint that is connected by hyaline cartilage and is immoveable
What is an example of a syndesmosis joint?
Radius and ulna and tibia and fibula
What is an example of a suture joint?
coronal
What is an example of a synchondrosis joint?
Epiphyseal plate
What is the symphysis joint?
a cartilaginous joint connected by fibrocartilage and is slightly moveable
What is an example of a symphysis joint?
intervertebral discs and pubic symphysis
What is the articular capsule?
Joint capsule that surrounds the ends of the bone
what is the synovial membrane?
lines articular capsule and makes synovial fluid
what is a joint cavity?
The inside space of a capsule that secretes synovial fluid
what does a pivot joint do and example?
permits rotational movement about a longitudinal axis
Atlas axis(shaking head no)
What does the plane joint do and example?
side to side movements
Carpal bones and tarsal bones
what does a hinge joint do and example?
permits bending in only one plane
Elbow and knees pip and dip joints
What does the condylar joint do and example?
Biaxial movements (movement in two places) metacarpal-phalangeal joints (knuckles)
what does the saddle joint do and example?
wide range of motion
Base of thumb
What does a ball and socket joint do and example?
provides greatest range of motion
In shoulder and hip
What is flexion?
decreases joint angle
what is extension?
Increases the joint angle
What is dorsiflexion?
dorsum of foot is moved closer to the anterior surface of leg
what is plantar flexion?
Foot and toes is moved closer to the posterior surface of the leg
what is lateral flexion?
trunk of body moves in a coronal plane laterally away from body
what is abduction?
Body part moved away from midline
