Intro bacteria Flashcards
1
Q
what should you cinsider when evaluating microbial disease and treatment
A
- what is the site of infection (could suggest potential pathogens)
- what are the clinical signs (may suggest possible causes)
- is this expected or not
- what are sensible choices for treatment
- what do i need to confirm prior to treatment
2
Q
list the relative sizes of microorganisms
A
white blood cells: 10-15 um
red blood cells: 7 um
yeast: 5um
bacteria: cocci = 1 um, rod = 5 um
viruses: 20-300 nm
prion: molecule, very small
3
Q
list the key structures of bacterium
A
4
Q
describe the structural differentiation of bacterial cell walls
A
see lecture notes for more detail
5
Q
what are endospores
A
- hard to penetrate by certain chemicals (including stains, disenfectants and chemical agents)
- resistant to higher temps (up to 100 degrees)
- resistant to most of common agents that would kill vegetative cells
