Instrument & suture material quiz Flashcards
What kind of grip is this
Penholder grip
- very stable
- good contact angle
- allows only short slide cuts
What kind of grip is this
Fingertip grip
- less stable
- flatter contact angle
- allows long slide cuts
What kind of grip is this
stab cut
- visceral puncture
- difficult to control depth
What kind of grip is
push cut
- large animal Sx only
- deep incision
What are these different scalpel blades and what is their purpose
Name?
Littauer scissors
What am I used for?
Used for removal of tight/small or awkward sutures.
Name
Metzenbaum Scissors
How would you hold me?
Held in Tripod grip.
Thumb in one ring & third or ring finger in other ring.
1st & 2nd finger are used to stabilise instrument along blade.
What am I used for?
Good for fine dissection of tissues & more delicate work. Not for cutting suture material.
Name
Mayo Scissors
How would you hold me?
Held in tripod grip.
Thumb in one ring & third or ring finger in other ring.
1st & 2nd finger used to stabilise instrument along blade.
What am I used for?
for cutting heavy/tough tissue, such as fascia.
Name
Dressing scissors
How would you hold me?
Held in tripod grip.
Thumb in one ring & third or ring finger in other ring.
1st & 2nd finger used to stabilise instrument along blade.
What am I used for?
cutting dressing material & general work.
cutting suture material during surgery.
What instruments do you need for haemostasis
artery forceps
swabs
suction
electro-coagulation (Surgical diathermy)
What is the use of artery forceps when they’re curved down?
What is the use of artery forceps when they’re curved up?
What is the blue line on swabs for?
Raytex markers
- Important for cavity surgery….
- Blue line is radiodense.
What are these?
Laparotomy sponges
Larger in size
Can be used for packing the abdomen
Tabs attached to help pull out
Radio dense tab inserted
What is my name?
Treves tissue forceps.
What am I used for?
General purpose rat toothed forceps.
Used in general surgery.
Traumatic to tissues.
What am I called?
Allis tissue forceps
What am I used for?
Use for grasping and retracting more tough connective tissue for example the linea alba. They can be traumatic so not to be used on skin.
What is my name?
Babcock Forceps
What would I be used for?
For use in grasping more delicate viscera and retracting.
Less traumatic than Allis tissue forceps.
What is palming good for?
allows handling of other instruments or tissues at the same time
How do you decide which suture material to use?
You need to think about:
- type of tissue you are repairing & nature of wound
- how long it needs support for
- characteristics of suture material
- size of suture material
- type of needle – cutting or atraumatic
- what is available in the practice
- preference or what you are used to using
How do you decide what size suture material to use?
Smallest size of suture material that provides adequate support
Rule of thumb:
- 3 metric for dogs
- 2 metric for cats
- delicate tissue - reduce by 1 size
- tough tissue - increase by 1 size
What other methods of skin closure are available?
Skin staples- quick & easy to apply, requires special instrument to remove staples
Tissue adhesive - useful in rabbits & other small animals as it is more acceptable to them instead of skin sutures
