Differential diagnoses for Cutaneous & Subcutaneous masses Flashcards
How do you differentiate between neoplasia?
What are some examples of epithelial skin tumours
Trichoblastoma (basal cell tumour)
Trichoepithelioma (hair follicle tumour)
Squamous cell carcinoma
Sebaceous cell tumours (adenoma, carcinoma, epithelioma)
Anal sac apocrine adenocarcinoma
Perianal gland (hepatoid) adenoma
Describe mesenchymal skin tumours
Arise from connective tissue, muscle, bone & cartilage, nerve, endothelial cells
Cells in non-cohesive aggregates or individually
Cell borders are variably defined & often indistinct
Embedded in matrix
Spindle shaped cells with cytoplasmic tails common
Cells can be oval or plump
Describe features of a lipoma
Adipocytes with small nucleus & abundant (single vacuole/globule) cytoplasm
Free Fatty droplets
Identical to subcut fat
Give examples of round cell tumours
Describe features of round cell tumours
Individual cells/not adherent
Roundish cells
High cell harvest
What is a plasmacytoma?
when abnormal plasma cells grow into tumour in bone or soft tissue
Describe features of plasmacytomas
Discrete cells
Eccentric nuclei
Chromatin clumping
Perinuclear clear zones
- Golgi, Ig production
What types of cells are these?
Give some examples of mesenchymal tumours
