Cytology SDL Flashcards
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Highly cellular smear with large, monomorphic lymphoid cells, lymphoglandular bodies & poor stain penetration. Some mitotic figures, rare neutrophils/eosinophils.
Lymphoma
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Low cellularity, mostly small lymphocytes (>75%), some intermediate/large ones. Clear background, few RBCs.
Lymph node reactive hyperplasia
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Nearly acellular, RBCs, non-degenerate neutrophils, keratin-like basophilic patches, cholesterol crystal.
Follicular (epidermal inclusion) cyst
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Clusters of round, monomorphic cells with eccentric nuclei, foamy cytoplasm, no atypia/inflammation.
Sebaceous adenoma
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Mostly anuclear blue-staining structures (keratin/squames), no inflammation.
Follicular (epidermal inclusion) cyst
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Low cellularity, mix of degenerate/non-degenerate neutrophils, foamy macrophages, keratin squames, no infectious agents.
Mixed (pyogranulomatous) inflammation
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Moderately cellular, round cells in clusters, metachromatic granules, poor nuclear staining.
Mast cell tumour
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Low cellularity, mostly intermediate/large lymphocytes, lymphoglandular bodies, irregular nuclear borders.
Lymphoma
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Clusters of swollen, rounded cells, pale cytoplasm, nuclei pushed to edges
Lipoma or subcutaneous adipose
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Moderately cellular, debris, degenerate neutrophils, foamy macrophages.
Mixed (pyogranulomatous) inflammation)
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Small groups of medium-sized round cells, pale cytoplasm, moderate nuclear variation, rare binucleation.
Cutaneous histiocytoma
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Moderately cellular, spindle-shaped cells with indistinct borders, moderate anisocytosis.
Sarcoma
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Highly cellular, pleomorphic cells, anisocytosis, anisokaryosis, variable N:C ratio, some multinucleated cells.
Carcinoma
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Moderately cellular, clustered cells forming duct-like structures, anisocytosis, anisokaryosis, high N:C ratio, occasional multinucleation.
Carcinoma
Describe & diagnose the lesion
Moderately cellular, exclusively degenerate neutrophils, coccoid bacteria in pairs/quartets.
Neutrophilic inflammation with sepsis
