Help Me Chapter 2 Only First half Flashcards
Myelin sheath
Layer of fatty tissue that segmentally encases fibers of many neurons, and it enables greater transmission speed of neural impulses as they hop from node to node
Action potential
A neural impulse, a brief electrical charge that travels down axon.
Threshold
The level of stimulation required to trigger a neural impulse
Synapse
The junction between the axon tip of sending neuron and dendrite or cell body of the receiving neuron
Neurotransmitters
Chemical messengers that travel synaptic gaps between neurons and bind to receptor site to influence whether a receiving neuron will fire
Acetylcholine ACH
Neurotransmitter that enables learning, memory and triggers muscle contraction.
Alzheimer’s
Dopamine
Influences movement, learning, attention and emotion.
Schizophrenia and Parkinson’s
Serotonin
Affects mood, hunger, sleep and arousal.
Depression
Endorphins
Natural, opiate like neurotransmitter linked to pain control and pleasure
Nervous system
Body’s speedy, electrochemical communication network, consisting of all the nerve cells of the PNS and CNS
Central nervous system CNS
The brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
PNS
The sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body
Nerves
Neural cables that contain axons and connect the CNS with muscles, glands, and sense organs
Sensory neurons
Neurons that carry incoming information from the sense receptors to CNS
Motor neurons
Neurons that carry outgoing information from the CNS to muscles and glands
