Mittelrhein Riesling Charter (MRC)
Founded in May 2011 by 38 members, the following Charter (modeled specifically after Vinea Wachau) applies only to members of the organization:
Classification: Handstreich: "Coup" max. 11% abv max. 89° Oe. TA:RS ratio - 1:3*
Felsenspiel: “Rock Game”
max. 12.5% abv
max. 95° Oe.
TA:RS ratio - 1:2*
Meisterstück: “Masterpiece”
min. 12.5% abv
min. 95° Oe.
max. 9 g/L RS
TA must be within 2 g/L of RS.
Accomplished Riesling: 100% Riesling only. Wines must score a 3 out of 5 on a blind tasting to show typicity.
Interaction of the Elements: Wines must show their typicity through the interplay of the four natural elements (fire, air, water and earth) and the traditional methods of production.
Natural Rhein Wines: Grapes must hand-harvested, wines may not be subject to adulteration such as concentration, fractionating or flavoring.
Exclusive Growing Area: Grapes must be sourced from within the Mittlerhein anbaugebiet.
Producers Bottling: Producers must be located and bottle wines in the Mittelrhein.
Profile Wines with Heart: Producers bottle their wines under 1 of 3 quality designations (above) based on their preference.
World Heritage Preserve: A fixed portion of producers’ revenues are deposited into a Charter Fund to preserve and protect the unique cultural landscape of Mittelrhein viticulture and wine making.
