Which of the 3 terms can legally appear on a label?
A) Grosses Gewächs
B) Erstes Gewächs
C) Erste Lage
B) Erstes Gewächs
Explain GG
- Dry wines within Grosse Lage is in this category
- Must be dry !! May not contain more than 9g/l residual sugar
- Min Spatlese ripeness, top level wines from selected sites.
- Wines can be chaptalized so they can’t bear any pradikat! Not covered by german wine law.
- With the introduction of the new classifications of top dry German wines, Erstes Gewachs and Grosses Gewächs, the VDP has discouraged the continued use of Auslese trocken, as it has been seen as confusing for the consumer to have sweet and powerful dry wines with the same Prädikat.
- The Grosses Gewächs category is reserved for Grosse Lage ONLY, so producers of Erste Lage dry wines must label their products as “Trocken”instead.
- In addition, while all VDP members are committed to Grosse Lage, individual member organizations in each anbaugebiet may choose whether or not to develop an Erste Lage designation.
- In the Pfalz, for instance, this category will exist and some former top sites, like Paradiesgarten and Kalkofen in Deidesheim, will be recast as Premier Cru.
- Max yield is 50 hl/ha
T or F? The top VDP Gross Lage level (2012) ‘top site’, highest quality level, ‘Grand Cru like’, 1st growth can be dry (GG), or sweet Pradikat
- True!
- If dry, must be GG
- If sweet, must have Pradikat level
- The former Erste Lage logo–a “1” followed by a cluster of grapes– will be applied only to wines of Grosse Lage quality
- Bürklin-Wolff labels its Grosse Lage wines as GC for Grand Cru rather than GG
- Aspects of the classification also differ from one anbaugebiet to another: in the Mosel, for instance, producers may now make Grosse Lage wines at every prädikat level, but producers in Pfalz will not be able to produce Kabinett Grosse Lage.
- Max yield is 50 hl/ha
Explain the VDP Erste Lage (Premier Cru) second level
- used by VDP in all regions EXCEPT Mosel and Rheingau
- Erste Lage: ONLY Riesling allowed for Mosel, Nahe, Mittelrhein
- other grapes are allowed for other anbaugabiets
- dry wines from Erste Lage labeeld “Qualitatswein Trocken”
- Max yield is 60 hl/ha
Define Ortswein/Klassifizierte Lagenweine
