Q

How does alcohol affect the developmental embryology of a potential newborn?

A

During the period of gastrulation, the embryo is very sensitive to teratogens. Alcohol affects cells ability to place organs in the right spot at right time (slowed cell migration). It also affects neural crest cell motility or cell death leading to abnormal craniofacial development. It can also lead to abnormal midline structures.
