What are the ten components to a comprehensive geriatric assessment?
Audio/ Visual Gait/ Mobility/Falls Insomnia Nutrition GI GU ADL/IADL Mood/ Memory Environment Sexuality
What is a Geriatric Depression Scale?
It is a screening test to determine how patients moods are. Normal is less than 5. Above 5 suggest depression.
What is the DETERMINE checklist?
It is a checklist to see whether you patient is getting adequate nutrition in their life. It scores whether the person in question is at a nutritional risk.
What is a Mini Mental Status exam?
This is the basic test to determine whether the patient physical mental health. Helps to determine dementia
Who are the members of the geriatric interdisciplinary team?
Physician, nurse, social worker, dietician, physical therapist, and occupational therapist
What is the get up and go exam?
This is an important test to determine how a patient is able to move. The patient has to get up out of a chair and walk ten feet, turn around and walk back. Physicians can assess proximal limb weakness, patients ability to walk and things like if a patient is a fall risk.
What are the common visual impairments associated with older age?
As age increases visual impairment increases.
Cataracts is the most common reversible kind.
Macular degeneration (wet) - #1 cause of irreversible blindness
Glaucoma is the 2 leading
Diabetic retinopathy - destruction of the small blood vessels in the eye

What are the different types of macular degeneration and how can you distinguish them?
Dry - deposits of yellow drusing (Long time)
Wet - abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina leak fluid (rapid onset)
Vision loss from central out
What is a cause of glaucoma and how does vision loss occur?
Glaucoma is a result from increased aqueous pressure leading to a disruption of vitreous fluid within the eye. Vision loss from outside in.
What is diabetic retinopathy?
Results from abnormal permeability and vascular occlusions. Creates blind spots that can change throughout the day.
What is cataracts?
Cloudy disease - various mechanisms can cause it.
