FOM 3.1.1 Flashcards
What is the complication that Xiaobin Lu is facing?
His two medicines are interacting w/ eachother (buspirone & erythromycin)
Why are busprione & erythromycin interacting w/ eachother?
Both utilize the CYP3A4 pathway (member of Cyt P450 family of enzymes)
How does erythromycin affect the digestion & absorption of buspirone?
Erythromycin inhibits buspirone digestion, which increases it’s serum levels.
What is the recommended course of action?
Bactrim, it uses an alternate digestive pathway.
Why can’t a patient take aspirin & ibuprofen?
ibuprofen is a competitive inhibitor of COX1 that outcompetes ASA.
What is the recommendation if a patient is required to take ASA & ibuprofen?
The patient should take the ASA prior to taking the ibuprofen to give it an advantage.
Pharmacodynamic interactions
Drugs influence each other’s effects directly
Are all drugs acting on the same target additive?
Depends on the biochemical mechanism
