Q

Describe the impact of lack of access on healthcare disparities?

A

Barriers to preventive and curative services lead to healthcare disparities. (recall the cliff example with primary prevention, safety net programs and secondary prevention, and medical care and tertiary prevention) aka differences in life opportunities, exposures, and stresses result in differences in underlying health status

Q

Describe “the Gap” in terms of health insurance coverage?

A

Those who would have qualified for Medicaid had their state opted in, but cannot purchase insurance on the exchange.

(aka through the exchanges (ACA healthcare marketplace), plans can be bought for those that are 100-400% of the FPL. Or through the states Medicaid expansion where everyone is covered whose income is less than the 138% of the FPL IF THE STATE AGREES TO EXPAND!!! MO and KS did not. Therefore, if you are a Kansan and are 90% of the federal poverty level, you will not be eligible for the subsidy plans thru the exchanges and also not below the current Medicaid cutoff of 20% of the FPL (if your state does not expand), therefore in the gap and cannot obtain coverage.

***Essentially between 20% and 100% of the FPL when your state chooses to not expand Medicaid.

Sorry for the long explanation but its not a simple answer. Also, Vote for Myles Sanders!
