Deployment of AFOs
‘Authorised Firearms Officers’
Officer can authorise deployment for ‘reason to suppose’ that officers may have to protect themselves or others from from a person who:
-Possession of (or immediate access to) firearm or other lethal weapon
-Otherwise so dangerous that the deployment of armed officers is considered to be appropriate
-As an operational contingency in a specific operation
-For the destruction of animals which are dangerous or suffering unnecessarily.
SFC
Strategic Firearms Commander - determines the strategic objectives and sets any tactical parameters. Retains strategic oversight and overall command and responsibility
TFC
Tactical Firearms Commander - Develops, commands and coordinates the overall tactical response in accordance with strategic objectives
OFC
Operational Firearms Commander - Commands a group of officers carrying out functional or territorial responsibilities related to tactical plan.
Stay Safe Principles
Think about your own and public safety
-Use NDM
-Don’t approach unnecessarily
-Use cover from firearms
-Consider safe approach/escape routes
-Consider safety of others
-Direct and/or disperse potential victims
-Wear correct PPE

Confirm (The information, location firearm)
Cover (from sight and from fire)
Contact (fully update control room/supervisors)
Civilians (Direct to safety)
Colleagues (Keep them away from danger)
Contain (As safely as possible until firearm officers arrive)
Building Colour Coding
A building will be designated a colour ‘face’ with white (6 o’clock) being the agreed front of the property.
Red is right-hand side (3 o’clock), black is back (12 o’clock) and green is left (9 o’clock position)
Door & Windows Designation
Number features left to right (bottom left window White 1:1, next door is White 1:2. Top right window may be White 2:1 for example)

What do you do if you find a weapon?
Notify a AFO and attach a red ‘unsafe’ label to the weapon.
With a Firearm NEVER…
Touch the trigger, exposed hammer or any other part of the weapon that may cause it to discharge.
Never allow other persons to handle, examine or ‘play’ with any weapon
Do not point weapons at anyone
Do not try to make a weapon safe
Always assume the weapon is loaded and real
Marauding Attack
Can be ranging from single to multiple attacks with bladed weapons, firearms or explosives.
Marauding means actively seeking victims. May be a Marauding Terrorist Attack (MTA)
Zones of Marauding Attack
Hot Zone - Area assessed to contain a credible and continuing threat to life. (Attack with a weapon is present)
Warm Zone - Area assessed where attackers are not believed to be, but an identified threat remains
Cold Zone - No known threat exists or control measures have been implemented.
