What is race?
Perceived biological or physical differences between groups such as skin colour
What is ethnicity?
Cultural differences between groups based on religion, language, country of origin, customs, norms, values, food, dress and music
Why is race an outdated concept?
Has been used to justify domination and abuse of one ethnic group by another but genetic differences are very small
Which ways are ethnic identities transmitted?
Processes of socialisation such as religion, media and education
What is cultural assimilation?
- Immigrant groups becoming so established in Britain that it is difficult to recognise that they were ever non British
- Modood
What is an ethnic group?
A group who share the same cultural background
What is an ethnic minority group?
A group who share the same cultural background but which is different to the majority culture in the country they reside
What is nationality?
Refers to the country of origin or country where you are legally entitled to reside
What is racism?
Negative attitudes or behaviour towards a person or group due to their racial or ethnic background
What is institutional racism?
When the way an organisation operates have the unconscious effect of discriminating against and disadvantaging certain ethnic groups
What is migration?
Moving from one country to another
What is emigration?
Moving out of a country
What is immigration?
Moving into a country
What are push/pull factors?
Factors that influence emigration/immigration
What are some examples of push factors?
Natural disasters, poor education, religious persecution
