Enzymes + energy carriers Flashcards
What is the active site?
It’s the part of an enzyme that combines with the substrate
Mechanisms of enzyme action - the induced fit model
The substrate combines with the active site of the enzyme
The active site is induced or caused to change shape slightly
The substrate and a
Enzyme form an enzyme substrate complex, the bonds in the substrate are altered so that the substrate changes into the product[s]
Products leave the active site which means the active site returns to its original shape and can now accept a new substrate molecule
Most enzymes are said to be specific to a single substrate, why?
The reason for that is that each active site will only fit or react with a single substrate
Anything that will change the shape of the active site will reduce the ability of the enzyme to work effectively
What reactions are energy involved in?
Photosynthesis - energy in sunlight used to make food. Respiration, food is broken down to release energy
What molecule has a vital role in trapping and transferring energy
ATP
