emotional appraisal Flashcards
summary of the cognitive perspective
-biology can explain why we have some emotions, but it cannot explain complex emotions like hope, gratitude, pride, envy, pity, etc. In order to understand complex emotions you need to understand cultural and social factors.
examples of a few cognitive appraisals
is this event good or bad?
is there any potential benefit or gain from this event?
Is there any potential harm or loss that could come from this event?
is there a potential threat associated with this event?
Can I cope with this situation or is it overwhelming?
what is the appraisal process?
situation—-appraisal (good or bad)——emotion (liking v. disliking)——-action (approach v. withdrawl)
what is a primary appraisal?
considers the relevance to self (benefit, herm, or threat?)
what are secondary appraisals?
considers if the individual can cope with the situation
what does attribution explain
