Diuretics Flashcards
general mechanism of action
works in the kidney to prevent sodium reabsorption
when would you use thiazide vs loop
thiazide for hypertension and loops for edema/fluid retention
loops
work in the loop of henle and are the strongest, linear response curve, can handle larger doses, used for fluid retention
thiazide
flat response curve, small dosing, hypertension, second strongest, works in the distal tubule
potassium sparing
weakest, works in distal tubule and to the collecting duct, normally used in combo to help eliminate side effects
loops electrolyte side effects
decrease ca, k, mg
loops sensitivity to renal function
work dispute the renal function because these work in the blood
thiazide electrolyte side effects
increase ca, decrease k and mg
thiazide to renal funciton
doesn’t work if renal function is low because not enough drug is filtered to work
k sparing electrolte effects
increase K, decrease mg
main side effects
hypovolemia, hypotension, dizziness, hyperglycemia, increase choltererol and tris, hyperuricemia, impotence
spironolactone uses, mechanisms, side effects
heart failure
aldosterone and tesoterone blocker
gynecomastia
loop drugs
furosemide
torsemide
thiazide
hydrochlorothiazide
chlorothalodone
K sparing
spironolactone, triamterene
