Calcium Channel Blockers Flashcards
general mechanism of action
blocks the influx of calcium into cells (influx of calcium is essential to muscle contraction) these works at the AV/SA node and/or vascular smooth muscle
DHP affect what
vasodilation
NDHP affect what
vasodilation (not as strong as DHPs) and heart rate
side effects for NDHP
AV node block
Bradycardia
constipation
hypotension (common with all CCB)
side effects for DHP
reflex tachycardia
pedal edema (which when paired with ACEI eliminates pedal edema)
flushing, headache (due to vasodilation)
hypotension, (common with all CCB)
reflex tachycardia
DHP do not affect heart rate but they do affect vessels and can lower pressure so much that the blood can rush to lower extremities and heart rate can compensate for low blood pressure
INDIRECT AFFECT
would we every use DHP for a fib or tachy
NO
DHPS have no effect on the heart rate so this would be pointless
drug interactions and DHPS and NDHPS
NDHPS: cause more interactions than they are subject to because they can slow the metabolism
DHPS: are more subject to interactions
metabolism
turns drugs water soluble so they can be extreted
NDHP drugs
verapamil and diltiazem
DHP drugs
amlodipine and nifedipine
DHP ending
PINE
inotropic and chronotropic
inotropic: heart beat force
chronotropic: heart rate
DHPS cause
vasodilation
NDHPS cause
vasodilation, decreased heart rate and weakening of force of contraction
