Benzodiazepines & Anti Anxiety Agents Flashcards
mechanism of action
gaba opens chloride channels on the nerve cells and allow Cl- to enter neuron at bigger concentrations and cell is more - than outside which makes it harder for anything to activate that neuron
difference between benzos and barbs mechanism of action
where they bind to
types of effects achieved
disinhibition, antiaxitey, sedation, hypnosis, anestheia, medullary depression, coma
why is it easier to achieve medullary depression and coma with barbs
because of the linear dose-response effects
flumazenil
reverses benzos
benzos dose reponse relationship
flat
buspirone
acts on serotonin receptor
no sedation, abuse, dependance
antiafxitey
short half life (extended release might be useful)
notice changes after 2 weeks
main adverse effects with benzos
CNS depression, drowsiness, sedation
why is there certain drugs that we use for sleep and anxiety but are the same drug
we want drugs with short half life and short T max to be used to aid with sleep, we do not want pt to have to wait to go to sleep we also do not want sedation to follow over to the morning
antiafxitey can have longer half life to limit how much we give, we do not care much about tmax with antianxitey we just want steady income of drug
unique of lorazepam
water soluble so decrease concern of interactions
can also be used with damaged liver
Benz drugs
alprazolam
clonazepam
diazepam
lorazepam
z drug
zolpidem
