Beta 2 Receptor Agonists Flashcards
mechanism of action
stimulates B2 which cause smooth muslce relaxtion
most receptors are in bronchioles
SABA vs LABA
SABA: work quicker, don’t last, rescue inhaler
LABA: don’t work quick, last long, preventative inhaler
adverse effects
skeletal muscle tremor
tachycardia
nervousness
hypokalemia: relative= pushes K into cells so blood K drops
these are due to B2 stimulation else where besides lungs
warnings about LABAs in asthma
hospitalization and death due to desensotivty
- must use steroid with LABA which eliminate attacks and make desnsitivty less likely to happen
- do not use as first defense
- shortest duration possible
pros of inahlers
speed of onset is faster
fewer systematic adverse reactions
cons to inhalers
increase systematic effects when inhaled incorrectly
benefits rely on technique
- use a spacer which creates smaller particles and get deeper into the lungs
- wait in-between doses because if having a bad attack is the first does opens the airways a little bit and then you can inhale more of the second dose
SABA
albuterol
LABA
salmeterol
formoterol
vilanterol
what one is only use for COPD
vilaternol (due to long half life)
