how do 5 alpha reductase inhibitors work
inhibits conversion of testosterone into DHT which is what causes glandular part of prostate to grow
5 alpha reductase and a1 antagonists difference in onset of action
5a have full effects in 6-12 mo
a1 start working immediately
advserse effect of a1 nonspecific and specific
both: decrease ejaculate volume
nonspecific: nasal congestion, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, orthostatic hypotension (due to activating alpha in vessels and causing vasodilation)
5a adverse reactions
decrease ejaculate volume
decrease libido
gynecomastia
who should not be in contact with 5a
pregnant women
this is beacause this is easily absorbed into the blood and DHT is vital for a developing male fetus
