Disease of The Rumen Flashcards
What is the most important disease of the rumen?
Traumatic reticuloperitonitis (TRP)
What is your worry with this?
Pieces of wire from the “bead” of disintegrating tyres are the commonest reticular foreign body
What is this used for?
Mixer wagons commonly have magnetic plates to catch metallic objects as the feed is dispensed: but these aren’t perfect!
Discuss the method of this rumenotomy
Temporary rumenostomy created by suturing edges of rumen incision to skin
Sutures overlap to create complete seal
This can be left as a semi-permanent stoma or closed at the end of the surgery
Discuss the method of this rumenotomy
This is a Weingart frame
Quicker than “rumenostomy” technique
Easy method for keeping rumen incision out of abdomen
Closing the rumen using a modified Cushing suture (continuous, inverting)
Retaining clips removed from rumen and frame as suturing progresses (see image attached here)
What is the worry on this PM?
Proximity of heart to reticulum (FB)
What does this show?
Foreign body in reticulum
What is this and what is it secondary to?
Liver abscesses secondary to TRP
Name 2 chronic rumen hypomotility syndomres (4)
- Vagal indigestion
- Botulism
- Tetanus
- Peritonitis
Where is rectcal prolapse most common? How do we diagnose?
Rectal prolapses occur in some farm animal species (most often piglets and lambs, occasionally in calves; commonly associated with long-term colitis and/or diarrhoea, e.g. coccidiosis). Their diagnosis and management is very similar to that used in small animal species
