Math is relatively simple in German. Like English, there are many ways to say equations. German can use gleich (equals), ist (is), or macht (makes). Addition uses the word plus (plus) or und (and).

Study the following examples:

One and one is two. Eins und eins ist zwei.
Two plus two equals four. Zwei plus zwei gleich vier.

Subtraction uses minus (minus) or weniger (less).

Study the following examples:

Six minus three is three. Sechs minus drei ist drei.
Ten less than ten makes zero. Zehn weniger zehn macht null.

Multiplication uses mal (times).

Study the following examples:

Ten times ten is a hundred. Zehn mal zehn ist hundert.
Three times three equals nine. Drei mal drei gleich neun.

Division uses durch (through).

Study the following examples:

Eight divided by two makes four. Acht durch zwei macht vier.
Nine divided by three is three. Neun durch drei ist drei.

  1. RECHNEN…to calculate / estimate
  2. DIE ZAHL…number die Zahl (-en)
  3. BEZAHLEN…to pay
  4. ZÄHLEN…to count
    *Zählen has the nuance of validity, like in English.
    For example: Das zählt nicht. (That doesn’t count.)
  5. DIE RECHNUNG…bill / calculation die Rechnung (-en)
  6. MAL…times
    *Mal is also used to indicate how many times: einmal (once), zweimal (twice).
    It is also used in the phrase noch einmal (one more time).
  7. TEILEN…to separate / split / share teilen
  8. TRENNEN…to separate / chop / break up
    *The reflexive sich trennen is used to separate yourself from something, like a relationship.
    For example: Ich trenne mich von dir. (I am breaking up with you.)
  9. VERGLEICHEN MIT…to compare to vergleichen mit |verglich, verglichen|
  10. ÜBRIG…remaining / left over
