In German there are two words for to do: tun and machen.
What is the difference?
Machen has a nuance of to make, but even still, people most often use machen to ask the question: Was machen Sie? (What are you doing? ).
Tun is more often used in set expressions, which you learned previously:
I’m sorry. Es tut mir leid. (Lit. That does sorrow to me.)
That hurts me. Das tut mir weh. (Lit. That does pain to me.)
That’s good for me. Das tut mir gut. (Lit. That does good to me.)
tun…to do. TAT, GETAN
anworten auf…to answer
beginnen…to begin. BEGAN, BEGONNEN
bekommen…to receive or to get. BEKAM, BEKOMMEN
bleiben…to stay or remain. BLIEB, GEBLIEBEN
fliegen…to fly. FLIEG, GEFLOGEN
kosten…to cost
öffnen…to open
schließen…to close. SCHLOSS, GESCHLOSSEN
regnen…to rain

- I am answering the question.
Ich antworte nach der Frage. NO…Ich antworte AUF DIE Frage.
