These prepositions are called two-way because they can either be accusative or dative.
All of the two way prepositions show position and location.
If the sentence shows motion or a change in state:
use accusative.
If there is no motion:
use dative.

Study the following examples:
I am hanging the photo on the wall. Ich hänge das Foto an die Wand. DIE WAND = acc.
The photo is on the wall. Das Foto ist an der Wand. DER WAND - dative

The following prepositions can take either the accusative or dative case:

auf + das = aufs
bei + dem = beim
in + dem = im
in + das = ins
von + dem = vom
zu + dem = zum
zu + der (fem. dat) = zur
