Q

The COMPARATIVE form of adjectives is very similar to English. Add -er, plus the appropriate adjective ending. English also uses more, but German doesn’t, just add -er.

Study the following examples:

A fatter man. Ein dickerer Mann. ER+DER ending
The fatter man. Der dickere Mann. why e?

A more beautiful woman. Eine schönere Frau. why e?
The more beautiful woman. Die schönere Frau.

A louder child. Ein lauteres Kind. DAS Kind
The louder child. Das lautere Kind. why e?

To make the superlative (-est / the most ~) add the ending -st or -est and the appropriate adjective ending.
Adjectives that end in t, d, s, or z will take -est.

Study the following examples:
The fattest man. Der dickste Mann.
The most beautiful woman. Die schönste Frau.
The loudest child. Das lauteste Kind. why e?

If no noun follows the adjective, German can add am (an + dem) which literally translates to at the most ~.

This is more often used with verbs other than sein (to be), because with sein you can simply use a definite article, like English.

Notice with am the adjective is now in the dative case, and will always add -en.

Study the following examples:

He is the fattest. Er ist der dickste. Er ist am dicksten.
She is the most beautiful. Sie ist die schönste. Sie ist am schönsten.
The child screams the loudest. Das Kind schreit am lautesten.
