Q

The word egal is translated in the dictionary as equal or whatever.

These translations don’t really do the word justice. Egal can be used with pronouns in the dative case to say that you don’t care about something, or to say that something doesn’t matter.

Study the following examples:

I don’t care about that.
Das ist mir egal. SEIN + DATIVE PRONOUN +EGAL

She doesn’t care about the environment.
Umweltschutz ist ihr egal.

That doesn’t matter.
Das ist egal.

The word die Lust translates as desire, and it is used with haben to show your desire to do something, literally saying: I have desire to ~. It can be translated as: feel like or want.

Study the following examples:

I don’t feel like eating. I don’t want to eat.
Ich habe keine Lust zu essen. HABEN + LUST + ZU

Do you feel like drinking a beer? Do you want to drink a beer?
Hast du Lust ein Bier zu trinken?

She feels like going out. She wants to go out.
Sie hat Lust auszugehen.

Doch is used to contradict a negative sentence, to say that the opposite is true. It translates to: but / still / however / yet / actually.

Study the following conversation:

A: You don’t like pasta, do you?
A: Du magst keine Nudeln, oder?
B: Actually I do.
B: Doch.
A: But you didn’t eat it yesterday.
A: Gestern hast du sie aber nicht gegessen.
B: The pasta yesterday tasted bad, but I actually like pasta.
B: Die Nudeln gestern schmeckten nicht gut, doch eigentlich mag ich Nudeln.

Ab ~ bis ~ is used with time to say from ~ to ~. Ab is often paired with sofort (at once / immediately).

Study the following examples:

From 10:00 until 14:00.
Ab 10:00 bis 14:00
From now on. As of now. With immediate effect.
Ab sofort.
