Principles in Treaty for Maori Health (guidelines 2005):
- Enable Maori self determination over health (enable, accept, facilitate Maori to define knowledge, facilitate independence).
- Partnership.
- Recognize health as a Taonga.
- Recognize Maori have rights to equitable access/participation in health services/health delivery.
Cultural safety principles
- Cultural safety aims to improve the health status of New Zealanders and applies to all relationships through: acknowledging health gains and positive health outcome and beliefs/practices of those who differ from them.
- Cultural safety aims to enhance the delivery of health/disability services through a culturally safe nursing workforce by: empowering, understanding and applying social science concepts.
- Cultural safety is broad in application.
- Cultural Safety has a close focus on: understanding, challenging us, balancing and preparing.
What do Nursing council of new zealand do
o Regulating authority responsible for registration of nurses.
o Responsible for protecting health and safety of members of the public by ensuring that nurses are competent and fit to practice.
Nurses Registration Act 1901
provide registration to trained nurses within NZ.
Nurses Act 1977:
protects the title of ‘nurse’.
Code of Rights 1996:
- Be treated with respect
- Be treated fairly
- Dignity and independence
- Have good care/support that fits your needs
- Be told things in a way you understand
- Be fully informed
- Make informed choices, give informed consent (3 legal elements 0 must be freely given, must be given by consumer or by entitled person on behalf, must be obtained in accordance with such requirements as prescribed by the code).

Guidelines: Social Media and Electronic Communication:
o To maintain professional boundaries the nurse must build a therapeutic relationship (not disinterested/neglectful or violating boundaries).

: controls collection, use, disclosure, storage and access to personal information
Misuse of drugs act 1975 (reprint 2018):
o Defines illegal drugs, possession and supply. Will allow RN/RNP working in addiction services to prescribe controlled drugs for the purposes of treating addictions.
