Genitive of Time
Genitive use indicating the time within which or “kind” of time at which some action occurs.
Subjective and Objective Genitive
When the noun modified by the genitive is a noun of action (i.e. is closely related to a verb), the word in the genitive may denote either the subject or object of that action.
Genitive of Apposition
The word in the genitive may refer to the same person or thing as the word it modifies. The genitive simply identifies that person or thing more precisely.
Dative of Reference (or Respect)
The dative indicates the thing with reference to which something is true.
Dative of Time
The dative indicates the time at which the action of the verb occurred.
Dative of Advantage or Disadvantage
The dative may indicate the person to whose benefit or detriment something is done.
Accusative of Extent (or Measure)
The accusative may denote the extent of time or space over which some action occurred.
Accusative of Reference (or Respect)
This use of the accusative is similar to the dative of reference but less common.
