Course Guide Chapter 17: Regulation of Gene Expression Flashcards
What are inducible operons?
mostly turned off, and they are turned on only when necessary
What are repressible operons?
mostly turned on, and they are turned off when not needed
What are the four levels of gene regulation in eukaryotes?
- long-term transcriptional control and short-term transcriptional control
- post-transcriptional regulation
- translational regulation
- post-translational modification
What are transposable elements?
provide the opportunity for various genes to be moved from one place to another
What is tissue-specific gene expression?
During and after development, genes are expressed in a tissue-specific manner to facilitate the function of different cell or tissue types
What is coordinated gene expression?
Multiple genes in a biochemical pathway may be located in different loci of a same chromosomes or sometimes in different chromosomes. All of them need to be expressed in a coordinated manner by having a similar regulatory sequences recognized by a common transcription factor
What is the role of the trans-acting factors?
recognize specific cis-acting elements on the DNA by binding to a specific DNA base sequence and inducing or inhibiting transcription
