12
Q

What do stimulant laxatives do to produce bowel movement?

A

They increase the permeability of the intestinal mucosa ( lead to leaky tight junctions), Nacl and water leak back into lumen, stimulate the myenteric plexus in order to cause increased contractility, Increased PGs and intestinal secretions

16
Q

Lactulose

A

Osmotic laxative…used for encephalopathy because enteric bacteria metabolize it into acids and this process of acidification of the stool traps ammonia

17
Q

Lubiprostone mech?

A

activates cl- channels in the intestine. secretion and motility increase
