Constipation and Diarrhea Flashcards
What are the 5 groups of laxatives
- Dietary fiber/ bulk formers
- Surfactant laxatives
- Stimulant laxatives
- Saline and osmotic laxatives
- IBS
Metamucil is also called
Effer Sylium
What group is Metamucil in?
Bulk Formers
Metamucil MOA
Hydrophilic muciloid that forms a gelatinous mass when mixed with water.
Metamucil AE
gas, obstruction, may inhibit coumarin absorption
How do surfactant laxatives work?
They lower surface tension and enable water and fat to get into stool
Docusate sodium …what the hell is it
basically a stool softener. Surfactant laxatives are pretty much stol softeners by allowing water and fat into the stool.
Docusate AE
Can irritate intestinal mucosa so you should only use it for a short time
Castor oil
Anion surfactant laxative. Very rapid acting. Produces catharsis (complete evacuation of the bowel by stimulating peristalsis).
AEs of castor oil:
colic dehydration, electrolyte imbalance with overdose
What is the most potent group of laxatives?
Stimulants
What do stimulant laxatives do to produce bowel movement?
They increase the permeability of the intestinal mucosa ( lead to leaky tight junctions), Nacl and water leak back into lumen, stimulate the myenteric plexus in order to cause increased contractility, Increased PGs and intestinal secretions
Bisacodyl is what type of stimulant laxative?
Diphenylmethane
Bisacodyl is a prodrug that is converted by enteric bacteria. It has an enteric coating on it and if you disturb this prior to ingestion it will cause cramps
ok
Senna
derivative of senokot.
