Q

The oral cavity is lined by three types of mucosa, they are:

A

1) Masticatory- on gingiva and hard palate consists of SSE Keratinized and SSE Parakaratinized
2) Specialized- Dorsum of tongue. Has SSE keratinized
3) Lining- everything thats not dorsum of tongue, hard palate or gingiva. SSE nonkeratinized epithelium

Q

Specialized mucosa has lingual paillae. Four types, which type does not contain taste buds

SO…remember that taste buds are located within lingual papillae except the filiform type

Q

What are the 4 types of papillae and where are they located on the tongue?

A
  • Filliform- anterior 2/3 of the tongue. numerous, no taste buds
  • fungiform- scattered among filliforms, has taste buds
  • Circumvallates- divides anterior 2/3 and pos 1/3, surrounded by a moat. taste buds
  • Foliates- lateral edge, taste buds

Q

Two principle cell types in salivary glands?

A
  • Serous: secrete watery substance with protein, amylasem and lysozyme
  • Mucous cells: secrete mucous, which is lost during preparationso that the apical region looks empty. Look for a flat nucleus at the base of the cell.

16
Q

Striated ducts, part of salivary gland organization, do what?

A

Also modify the secretion, they are around the same size as an acinus though

17
Q

Interlobular ducts, part of salivary gland organization, do what?

A

They are found in the interlobular connective tissue and serve purely as conduits for salivary secretion

18
Q

Parotid gland is composed mainly of which of the two principle salivary gland cell types

A

Serous

19
Q

Submandibular gland = what cell type

A

mixed but still mostly serous

20
Q

Sublingual gland=

A

mixed but mostly mucous

21
Q

Which digestive enzymes are contained in saliva?

A

amylase and lipase
