CONCEPTS OF DEMOGRAPHY Flashcards
is the study of the size, territorial
distribution, and composition of population, changes
therein. (Duncan & Hauser 1972)
Demography
number of people in a given place at a given
time.
Population size
‘description of the people
Demography
is a collection of persons alive at a specified point in time
who meet certain criteria
Population
usually conducted by a national government
and attempts to enumerate every person in a country
Census
defined as the difference between live births and deaths in
a specified period of time
Natural increase
statistic calculated by subtracting the crude death rate
from the crude birth rate of a given region in a specified
period of time
Rate of natural increase (RNI)
measures the number of people that are added to the
population per year
Absolute Increase per year
is the actual differences between the two census counts
expressed in percent relative to the population size made. known as the population
growth rate
Relative Increase
the
proportionate numbers of persons in successive age
categories in a given population.
Age distribution
is the age that divides a population into two numerically
equally sized group
Median age
is an age-population ratio of those typically not in the
labor force and
those typically in the labor force
Dependency ratio
composition of population according to age and/or
sex is known as the age and sex structure.
Age and Sex Composition
the size of the population under investigation is depicted
on the horizontal axis, and age is aligned on the vertical
axis
Population pyramid
means the pattern of where people live
