Component 1: Soc 5 Flashcards
What are the Principles of training?
Specificity
Progressive Overload
Individual Needs
FITT (frequency, intensity, time, type)
What is Specificity?
Matching training to the particular requirements of an activity. Every sport has its own specialist needs; swimmers and footballers obviously train in different ways.
What is Progressive Overload?
Gradually increasing the amount of overload so as to gain fitness without the risk of injury. It means working at a higher range of intensity than the minimum threshold of training but staying below the maximum.
Define Individual Needs
Matching training to the requirements of an individual. The needs of the athlete must come first, using a fitter person’s programme won’t work as they have different starting points and needs.
Define FITT
The FITT principle enables you to plan an exercise programme to get the most out of it as safely as possible. Frquency (how often), Intensity (how hard), Time (how long) and Type (training method).
Give an example sport where different positions require specificity.
Specificity is clear in rugby, all players must be fit and strong. However, the forwards need to train for strength for scrummaging and rucking, whilst the backs need to be fast and agile to outwit opponents
Give an example of why thinking about individual needs in a training programme is important.
An extreme example of this is a first-time marathon runner using Mo Farah’s programme. The novice would be demotivated and may injure themselves.
