Q

What is the significance of each function of the skeletal system in sport?

A
  • Vital organ protection is required as, if they were damaged, you could potentially find it harder to breathe, think and perform.
  • The muscles you use in sport need strong points, to attach to and bons provide that framework.
  • Joints allow the body to make a variety of movements from small movements like grabbing to large movements like throwing.
  • The bones act as a store for calcium and phosphorus, two minerals that are vital for developing and maintaining the strong and healthy bones you need for exercise.

Q

What is the use of each classification of bone in sport?

A
  • Long bones are vital to generate movements when muscles attatched pull them, strength and speed
  • Short bones are usually associated with weight bearing, shock absorbing and spreading loads.
  • Irregular bones form protection for different body areas but also help to generate movement.
  • Flatbones protect your organs in contact sports and provide attachment for muscles to help movement.
