Component 1: Soc 20 Flashcards
What are the parts of a lever?
- Lever arm: rigid bar such as bone
- Fulcrum: the point around a levers rotation
- Load: the force being moved by the lever
- Effort: the force applied to move the load
What is the ordering of the 3 classes of levers?
- First class: Load, Fulcrum, Effort
- Second class: Effort, Load Fulcrum
- Third class: Fulcrum, Effort, Load
What are mechanical advantages and disadvantages?
Mechanical advantage - when the output (load) of the lever is greater than the input (effort), first class and second class levers are advantages.
Mechanical disadvantage - when the output (load) of the lever is less than the input (effort). third class levers are disadvantages
Give examples of first, second and third class levers.
First class - Tricep dip (the elbows the fulcrum, the hands the load and the triceps the effort)
Second class - Calf raise (the toes the fulcrum, the weights the load and the gastrocnemius is the effort)
Third class - Bicep curl (the elbows the fulcrum, the weights the hand and the biceps the effort)
